About Integrative Medicine

Integrative Medicine (IM) is whole-person oriented medicine that considers all factors that influence health and disease

what is integrative medicine.

Integrative Medicine (IM) is whole-person oriented medicine that considers all factors that influence health and disease.  It makes use of all appropriate treatments, including novel, cutting edge therapeutics, diagnostics and natural medicines as well as conventional standard drug therapy, psychological and biofeedback approaches to facilitate the body’s innate healing response and provide patients the most effective treatment with the fewest side effects.

It looks at a holistic picture of health and factors that drive disease across speciality areas, and looks at transdiagnostic symptom clusters for interrelatedness in order to treat the whole person more effectively for chronic conditions.

Integrative Medicine is a fairly recent certified medical speciality recognized by the American Board of Physician Specialities (ABPS) in the USA, where it has become mainstream.  IM is supported by top Ivy League institutions which all now have their own integrative medicine speciality training programs for medical doctors alongside other post doctorate medical specialities such as cardiology and orthopedic surgery.

Definition of Integrative Medicine

As defined by the American Board of Physician Specialties, IM:

  • Focuses on the whole person, with decisions about prevention and treatment made based on medical evidence
  • Makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare modalities, and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing
  • Use of less-invasive and less-harmful interventions

Integrative Medicine offers a new approach to therapeutics based on evidence inclusive of both naturally-derived & pharmaceutical API (ie single pharmaceutical ingredients) used in combination or alongside one another.

This approach is suited to complex, overlapping chronic conditions & addressing mental wellbeing to highest standard of care, where drugs alone are not enough to get people well

IM is on the cutting edge of scientific research in natural bioactive compounds and novel therapies, including well- collected real world evidence studies.  It moves at pace with new developments based on new evidence to impact patient care outcomes

IM is growing in popularity because it is also in keeping with patient’s demand for more holistic, evidence-based options with less side effects and toxicities in the treatment of chronic conditions.

Integrative medicine also focuses on building resilience, reversing or halting chronic disease markers where possible and supporting optimal health and wellbeing rather than just making people ‘not sick.’

The UK does not yet have post doctoral training programs in integrative medicine which is why it is difficult to find a qualified integrative medical doctor here in the UK.

Dr. Gordon is the only ABOIM (American Board of Integrative Medicine) qualified physician in United Kingdom, the highest standard of integrative medicine training.

Integrative Medicine Treatment Plans.

By their nature, IM treatment plans are personalized and holistic long based on where you are in your health journey and specific needs.  Not everything is done at once, but modalities are expertly integrative into the treatment plan at the appropriate times and stages.   They may include:

  • Personalized & precision medicine approaches
  • Targeted Drug therapy – including using genetic & functional testing to choose the best medication options for you, alternative dosing regimens & repurposed and novel medicine combinations
  • Functional medicine testing – advanced testing ranging from biomarkers for illness and inflammation to microbiome testing, nutritional insufficiencies, hormone imbalances and genomics to identify root causes of symptoms where possible and work from a root cause perspective to reverse these barriers to  healing
  • Therapeutic Diets & Microbiome optimization-the brain-gut axis, microbiome and our diets can play a huge role in chronic illness and its management or in some cases, reversal
  • Prescribed combinations of Nutraceuticals, supplements & botanicals
  • Mindbody medicine-using an in-depth understanding of the bidirectional communication between brain and body including relaxation response training, biofeedback and neurofeedback, and mindful movement therapies
  • Lifestyle medicine Programs – sleep, exercise, work/home environment optimisation for peak performance & chronic illness recovery.
  • Cannabinoid medicines to treat multi-symptom clusters with a single well-tolerated medication
